Dynein
Cytoplasmic dynein-1 (hereafter, dynein) is a large protein complex that drives long-range retrograde transport along microtubules. It carries a broad range of cargos, from mRNAs to entire organelles and plays a key role in cellular processes as diverse as fast axonal transport, Golgi dynamics and mitosis. Structurally, dynein consists of a motor domain that produces mechanical motion and a tail domain that is important for cargo binding, regulation and homodimerisation. Dynein works together with another large protein complex called dynactin which is required for virtually all known dynein functions.
